My five have to do with being able to move up and down the water column.

1-- Bucktail jig                These two can be fished seperately or combined.

2--Curley tail grubs

3--Spoons                    Can be Hopkins,Little Cleo,or Side Winder

4--Clouser Minnow         Had to include two flies,as I primarily fly fish any more.

5--Wooly Bugger

Any or all of these can very effectively put meat on the table most anywhere in the world.

Gotta love the wooley bugger.  I use those quite a bit especially in the fall.  I like black but I find that I get just as many fish (or more) on olive.  Which color do you like?

I like black in the winter and early spring. Rest of the time,I like the olive, brown body /w olive hackle, and a mix I tie that has a peacock herl body, then furnace brown hackle palmered to thorax, and Grizzly collar. I tie it with brown thread sometimes, and with red thread sometimes. Puts the best elements of several really good classic flies together in one bundle. Try it,you'll like it,I think. I fish it trout in streams and warm water. Gills love it in the spring.

Sounds like a good tie.  I think that would work well here too.  Maybe I'll tie one someday.

Though I might have a better idea if you sent me one to try.   whistle biggrin

Hello guys

Its been a while has it?  Work, work, and more work...I just cant wait for my next fishing trip..  I havent gone fishing last week, but I was in Glorietta/Parksquare last Sunday with my family.  We were there for just a while, but I was able to visit and Outdoor shop I think Outdoor shop is the name, and they were selling some fishing tackle there.  They were also selling a few pieces of rapalas 3-5pcs I think.hehe.. And guess what, theyre selling only skitter pops And they even had the same exact model that I have.

And when I checked out the price, it was cheaper by I think Php20 or so,hehe some savings huh?    I checked out the other types of lures available there, and I saw the Tsunami brands, well its a whole lot cheaper at around Php230, and I cant help myself and I bought 2 lures, but this time its not a popper, its a sub-surface lure like the ones you told me Kit, one is in the form of a shrimp, and the other a minnow.  What do you think of that guys?  I just wanna try those out, and I was so darn tempted to buy some..And if only PAul was open the whole day on Sundays I think I couldve gone there too and bought a Daiwa reel, and more...more...more...tackle...mwahahaha...Im getting insane by the minute here...

My dad bought his first fishing rod too, he was also with me when we went to Jajas, and he loved it there, he loved the fishing experience too, thats why he wanted his own gear, although not as addicted as I am, hehe..He just bought another Shakepeare rod&reel medium action combo at Tobys, and here I go again, I also tried buying a 10-lb Spiderwire monoline, its Php470 at 400yds long is that expensive or cheap?it that a good brand?, I tell you guys, Im so badly infected by this fishing disease..hehe

And next, I went to PowerBooks at Greenbelt, and bought me some fishing Books.  I got some books authored by John Bailey on improving your bait fishing and another one of lure fishing, both were hardbound books priced at Php689 each, but since all of glorietta and greenbelt was on sale last sunday, Igot them for just Php515    And I read the book yesterday and I find the info there to be useful for my fishing.  I tried going to mAgazine stands evrywhere in Glorietta, and I couldnt find anyone who was selling decent fishing mags, although I saw one selling Fishing Facts mag, it was quite old, and I thought maybe it may not be good.  Arent there any shops here that sells fishing mags on a regular basis?

Anyway, this is the fun part, I was able to buy a fishing video cd at the Outdoor shop in Parkquare it was just a copy of the original,   and I watched the first half yesterday and it was cool  The cd was entitled Mudcrab to Marlin, and it features them wandering in the finest fishing islands near or away from the Australian continent, I really cant remember the place but I think it was part of Australia, although far from the main continent.   They were fishing from those islands that were not frequented by people, I think youll need a whole day boat ride from the shores of Australia to there, and the waters there didnt have any type of pressure from anglers, so I think its kinda like a virgin fishing grounds.  And you know what? They were catching BIG Trevallys with light gear  And theyre using a spinning reel type, they said with a 8kilo line.Is that still light stuff? Do you think theyre using MONOline?  Why is theyre line color green? What does that indicate? And another thing I noticed is that they are using POPPERs  They mentioned that they were using poppers, and they were not doing the popping action, they would just cast their poppers away then retreive it in a very fast speed.  So does that mean I could do the same thing with my popper? Just cast and crank away?

I also watched the divers there feeding a fish, it looked like a lapu-lapu to me, but I think I heard them call it Chub or something, Im not sure, but they were REALLY BIG fish and they were handfeeding these guys.COOl

I think this fishing video could be very helpful to me to, because I can watch how these guys cast and how they fight and land the fish properly..And they way they cast was just a backwing from the right side then all the way to the left.  Then they went to some place where they said they were gonna fish for barramundi.  What fish is that?  hehe, I really havent finished watching the whole video yet Do we have that fish here in the Phils?  And they were putting some mudcrabsin a small cage in the water, what was that for?Anyway, I guess Ill be studying this video thoroughly and my new fishing books, hopefully it could add a lot to my fishing knowledge and skills.

Thanks guys

Better late than never...

This is like asking "the best handgun" or "the best knife"...way too many variables.  I have fished around the world in many settings, for many species.

We might want to start some threads like best lure for:

Smallies in the river in the midwest
Smallies in the Great Lakes
Trout in Tenn creeks
Trout in the Great Lakes
Trout in California
Trout in the Rockies lakes
Trout in the ocean
Largemouth in slow water
Largemouth in natural ponds
Largemouth in reservoirs
Early season shallow ice
Mid season deep ice

It goes on and on...

Yup, lotsa' territory to cover with just five lures.  Old school:  Red/white Daredevil spoon    Johnson's Silver Minnow   Mepps No.2 spinner w hackle  Lazy Ike  Heddon's River Runt.   Newer Stuff:  Texas rigged plastic worm   Z rays (especially the little ones)   Countdown Rapala minnow -jointed   Floating Rapala minnow 1 piece  Panther Martin spinner .  You can still have a lot of good clean fun with a bobber a split shot a hook and a worm too.  Assuming of course you've given up explosives.  haha
