Not sure if this is the correct forum to post this under but, it doesn't really seem like an "everyman" topic so I'll leave it to the Mods Smiley

The eternal question that seems to plague anyone who has to carry things over any distance is:
What can I do to lighten my pack load a bit, what do I NEED?

This got me thinking about Kephart, Nessmuk, and other pioneers.
Then I went back to Otzi the iceman & did some googling on him.
This is a pretty basic kit and would take you through most situations.
Now this lead me to thinking what would ol' Keph or Otzi do if they had access to modern material.
So here is your challange & share w/ group please.
What would be your modern Iceman pack?

Use this or google as a reference: http://www.archaeologiemuseum.it/en/node/331

So my modern version of the kit would be:
GI Poncho
Wool sweater or Crusier (pref something that could be un-buttoned or zipped)
Wool watchcap
BDU pants
Wool socks
Hiking Boots

Wetterlings Small Forest Axe
Belt Knife (ML Kephart or BRKT Aurora)
DMT Double Side Diafold sharpener (Fine/Coarse)
50' Paracord
sm Backpack
Maxpedition Bottle Carrier 12x8
Stainless 38oz Guyot
Olicamp Cup
Guyot MicroBites
Hankie
Firesteel LMF Army
12 10" zipties
10' Ducttape around small tube w/ hooks & needles
Spool of 25# test monofilament
First Aid Kit (mostly meds)
The modern bow I have trouble with.
I could go with a modern bow & arrow which would be effective but then again I could probably make something for large game if needed. 95% of hunting will be small game.
.22 rifle would be really nice but a but limiting due to ammo (then again lead bullets while heavy can be used for fishing weights etc.)
A slingshot on the other hand provides unlimited ammo but takes some skill to use.
So I'm up in the air about this.
A 10' or 12'castnet would be very handy in numerous applications. The weights are the main drawback, I think my 12' one weighs like 10# or so. If there was an easy way to improvise weights I'd be sure to pack one.
Otzi lacked any sleeping equipment, I'd want to pack a wool blanket and a 10x10 sil-ny tarp.
Again this opens a question of Fleece insulation properties vs wool. Wool is a great insulator but sucks when it's wet. It stinks, is heavy, and take forever to dry. Fleece drys pretty quick but does it retain it's insulation properties when wet & how does it compare to wool?
I'd consider a small (like boyscout or crusader or GI ) cookset too for more versatility

Interesting question,   I'll have to sit down and make mine up...

We do need to discuss your choice of sharpening gear..... SHAME ON YOU!!!  A coarse diamond hone for convex ground knives?  wild

I'm not going to jack a good thread in it's infancy but you need to check out the thread I'll be putting in here tonight on sharpening Convex Knives.

there are a couple of things that come to mind, from your list that I would change.
i would choose a bigger knife (hudson bay, golok) over an axe.
a small pack to carry everything in
and i like the slingshot idea, but i know that i have worn out the rubber bands on newer slingshots in the past.  so i would probably recommend a "pouch " style sling, which can be easily made and stores smaller than a modern " Y " shaped sling shot.
thats all i have for now.  otherwise your list is pretty good.

oh, and a hat, maybe a tilley hat to be specific. good

Reid, yeah I dunno why I decided on the DMT stone over say wet/dry paper. I do recall I had a logic, maybe it was I could sharpen the edge with a rolling motion, after all man was making convex edges long before sandpaper Wink  The stone I was looking at as a field sharpener one the "iceman" or me would carry along with him. The Coarse/Fine stone seemed to fill the bill in that you could both repair/create edges with coarse then make them usable with the fine. Granted the fine side leaves a real toothy edge but it does work. Strops & finer stones could be found or fashioned along the way.
Rest assured at home I caress my convex edges with the finest grits, leathers, and compounds Smiley (still learning though as they aren't as sharp as I'd like)
I'm looking forward to seeing your list (others too as we all have different ideas)

Lochridge, why the large blade over the axe? I know I have used both & go back & forth but the axe imo just seemed to offer more versatility (hammer, ulu, etc) I'd be curious to hear your take.
We seem to be on the same page about the slingshot. I figured once the bands wore out I'd use the pouch to make a traditional sling. I made one as a kid & I tell ya it is a steep learning curve. I will say I can get the "shot" going in the direction I want dunno about taking down Goliath much less a rabbit on the run :P

Thanks for your input guys, really hope to see more!!

Do you still have the Barneys pack for sale? Im looking at possibly picking one up. Id prefer the Pinnacle bag, but could work with the Hunter if the price was right I assume that this is the freighter frame.
